All wax works are made from the same hard paraffin wax that I
have been reusing again and again since 1999. Re-melting a first
life-size figure that I carved from a one ton block has since resulted
in numerous new wax sculptures, with recent projects addressing the
impact our enterprises have on the biosphere. The fragility of the
sensual material and its partial translucency (in natural light) adds to the transient character of the work and what it
stands for.
GALLS
Galls
grow on trees after parasitic insects lay their eggs in tree bark,
injecting a substance that alters the tree cell structure. Meant to
provide for cozy nesting, an oddly shaped growth develops that has a
completely different DNA from the host tree. Sometimes the growth still
looks like a tree branch but is somewhat off in its shape. Through time,
it can alter the tree DNA entirely. The more stressed a tree is (i.e.
by loss of biodiversity), the less it can withstand the proceeding DNA
invasion, eventually killing it. Invasive alien gall infestations can become
quite a problem for indigenous trees.
